Grade 3 Greenhouse Effect Lesson

One of my practicums was with the digital literacy teacher at Stanley Elementary. The students at Stanley were passionate about the brand new school-wide composting initiative that my mentor was pioneering, so I planned and taught this lesson with the goal of using that interest to extend their learning. Composting is important is because, if food waste is sent to landfills, it produces greenhouse gases as it decomposes, exacerbating climate change. With this lesson, I aimed to establish a basic understanding of the greenhouse effect and how it works so that students know exactly why their composting initiative is making a difference and feel empowered to take climate action in their daily lives.
